High Bickington parish, village and the Historical Society

High Bickington is a rural, ridgeway village in a scattered, surrounding parish in North Devon, close to the beautiful River Taw. The origins of the village date back to Saxon times and many historic buildings remain to this day. In particular, the parish church, St Mary's, has remained in its various forms on the same village site since the Saxon period. Numerous residents have families and friends going back many generations who have lived in the immediate area, resulting in a deep knowledge and love of local history, matched to a strong community spirit.

The society was formed in 1999 by the Rev. John Carvosso. Local residents and the society were instrumental in supporting Avril Stone's local research and  subsequent publication in 2000 of the excellent local history book "The Book Of High Bickington: A Devon Ridgeway Parish". Avril later became the society's president and the society has run successfully ever since, celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2019-20.

The society's winter and spring meetings are held at 7.30pm on the 4th Wednesday of each month in the High Bickington Community Centre from September until April, but with no meeting in December. The meetings principally consist of a local guest speaker talking on any historical subject, local, national or international, relating to all periods  up to the current day (see Meetings menu items). Occasional visits are arranged, mostly during the summer, to local houses and sites of historical interest, many not normally open to the public (see Society Visits menu item).

The annual membership of £10, or pro rata for a part year, gives entry to all meetings. Non-members and guests are most welcome to attend for £3 per meeting. An additional charge usually applies for visits to historic houses, etc..

Note the society's privacy notice under the Privacy menu item.
